Intro to Herbalism w/ Clinical Herbalist Alyssa Dennis Intro to Herbalism w/ Clinical Herbalist Alyssa Dennis What is herbalism? Herbalism is as ancient as life itself. It predates recorded history, oral history, and even human beings. It is the foundation of all other forms of medicine & is the respectful use of whole plant materials such as leaves, flowers, fruit, seed, stem, bark, root, moss, lichen, seaweed or fungi to support & maintain health but also to prevent, alleviate, or resolve root causes of some of the most chronic dis-ease. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 75-80% of the world’s population still relies on medicinal plant preparations for their primary healthcare needs. In this introductory 2hr class we will delve into the benefits of herbs for holistic health. We will unpack the foundation of herbal medicine and snippets of its history. We will discuss basic herbal preparations & you will learn the benefits of 5 different herbs you can work with at home. Together we will taste a few herbs while discussing their actions on the body & identify what makes them work. Each participant will go home with a tea or tincture sample. About your Instructor Alyssa is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, clinical herbalist, wild-crafter & dirt worshipper. She is particularly interested in accepting & integrating the virtues of plant intelligence as a solution to climate change that positively restructures our relationship with the environment; one that is rooted in place-based identity which works to reestablish reciprocity, respect & responsibility with our non-human kin. Her clinical practice is centered around continuing the vibrancy of the peoples medicine that utilizes nutritional therapeutics and the contemporary practices of Chinese, Ayurvedic, Gaelic & European medical traditions. Her other teaching endeavors include a year long herbal course called the Herbal Compass: Navigating Healing Throughout the Calendar Wheel, The Invasive Apothecary & is the co-creator of the Invasive Species Creative Proposal Series.
