Description
The King’s Singers perform for the Grace Church Concert Series The King’s Singers have represented the gold standard in a cappella singing on the world’s greatest stages for over fifty years. They are renowned for their unrivaled technique, versatility and skill in performance, and for their consummate musicianship, drawing both on the group’s rich heritage and its pioneering spirit to create an extraordinary wealth of original works and unique collaborations What has always distinguished the group is their comfort in an unprecedented range of styles and genres, pushing the boundaries of their repertoire, while at the same time honoring their origins in the British choral tradition. They are known and loved around the world, and appear regularly in major cities, festivals and venues across Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia. The King’s Singers’ extensive discography has led to numerous awards including two Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, and a place in Gramophone magazine’s inaugural Hall of Fame. This commitment to creating a new repertoire has always been central to the group, with over 200 commissioned works by many leading composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Singing brought so many of us joy and strength during the darkness of the COVID-19 pandemic. “From Darkness” explores the importance songs can have in carrying people through times of darkness - this one and so many before it. Darkness once fell on composers who had to write their music in hiding, fearing punishment for their religious beliefs. It also fell when people were forced into exile, making music far from their homelands. And in a time of war, music became a welcome balm for wounded souls. Today, darkness is still lifting from a world in quarantine. But our world never lay silent. “From Darkness” highlights how times of darkness like these can produce so much beauty. On behalf of the Grace Church Concert Series Committee and our generous volunteers, we look forward to seeing you this season! The Grace Church Concert Series is funded in part through the generosity of Mrs. Jacqueline Mars in memory of her mother, Mrs. Forrest Mars, who was devoted to music and loved Grace Church. Sincerely, Jason Farris, artistic director, Lena Scott Lundh, chair emeritus & Gertraud Hechl, chairs emeritus. Committee Members: Enid Adams, Landon Butler, Deborah Dempsey, Kenneth Garrett, Robin Pegler, Ellen Soyars, Holli Thompson, Nancy West, and Dana Westring.
