ABOUT THE ARTIST Jonathan Hannau is a Chicago-based composer and pianist devoted to the surreal, minimal, abstract, and colorful possibilities of music. He actively embraces eclecticism and explores concepts of narrative, drama, and stark expression by evoking a kaleidoscopic range of timbres. As a pianist he has been praised for his delicate, refined touch, his capable handling of the extremes of dynamic shape, and his uncanny knack for navigating complex polyrhythms. His multi-style performance history has helped foster a unique approach to piano performance, pushing the limits of what is possible on the instrument. His debut solo piano album, Pieces I Wrote on a Cold Winter Night, is a deeply personal reflection on his ever-evolving relationship with music. Written while in residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the album is Jonathan’s first honest foray into the repetitive and reflective nature of minimalism. He dives into a world of complex textures, winding melodies, and repetitive ostinatos that ebb and flow to reflect the untamed season of winter. Each title evokes specific images of that season’s breathtaking stillness, stark beauty, and, at times, tumultuous realities. This project is partially supported by an Individual Artists Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events, as well as a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, a state agency through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Jonathan Hannau SPACE is a live music hall in Evanston, Ill., established in 2008.
