IN-PERSON Course: Be Ready: Be Prepared! When a disaster strikes it may be several days before emergency services arrive in your neighborhood. Be Ready: Be Prepared! Learn about bay area disaster risks, how to make a plan and prepare for a disaster, and how to stay informed during and after the disaster. Learn about important communication systems and how to communicate with your support network during and after a disaster. The department also provides protection for the unincorporated areas adjacent to those cities. The department's area of coverage is shown in dark green in the map below. SCCFD Area of Coverage Wrapping in an approximately 20 mile arc around the southern end of "Silicon Valley", the Santa Clara County Fire Department has grown to include 15 fire stations, an administrative headquarters, a maintenance facility, five other support facilities, 19 pieces of apparatus and 3 command vehicles, to cover 128.3 square miles (267 square km) and a population of over 226,700.
