OAK CREEK, WI — Oak Creek Police warned the public Thursday about a new way people are breaking into and stealing cars. A device typically used by locksmiths is getting stolen and used to hack keyless ignitions. Police Departments across the Milwaukee area, Oak Creek included, have put out statements about the new trend. Milwaukee has already seen a rise in thefts against locksmiths who have the equipment, Oak Creek police posted on Facebook. The tools have been getting stolen in armed robberies against locksmiths. The tool can plug into a car's ignition and override security features. The device's function, which is to help people who lose their keys or get locked out of their cars, is being used for more nefarious purposes. The Oak Creek Police Department posted tips for car owners and locksmiths on how to stay safe: Please obtain specific contact information (I.E. phone numbers and full names and addresses) of the individuals you may be meeting to assist with the programming of keys, prior to arrival. Meet in a public location and do not meet in secluded, dimly lit areas (i.e. alleys, parking lots).Attempt to verify the identity of the individual(s) requesting locksmith services through a State ID or Driver's License.Report any suspicious events and report incidents to police immediately.
