How To Fight Flooding: Montco Event Seeks To Empower Community

NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County communities are suffering from flood damage like never before, with the remnants of Hurricane Ida bringing with it historic chaos and other storms piling on. The climate outlook for the future means severe storms will be more intense and more frequent. But there's a way to fight back. The Montgomery County Planning Commission is holding an online seminar next week that aims to empower local municipalities, businesses, environmental groups, and residents into forming a more weather-resilient coalition. "Opportunities to manage stormwater effectively and aesthetically increase when municipalities, homeowners, and businesses work together," the event description reads. "Municipal efforts focus on municipal property including parks and open space, roads, and parking lots. Businesses and residents can help achieve an even more effective stormwater management program by installing green stormwater management facilities on their own properties." The seminar will detail past successful projects, where property owners have been incentivized to build and design systems to manage rainwater and reduce flooding. Special attention will be paid to "green parking lots" that promote natural drainage, provide shade, and incorporate green space.
