MALIBU, CA — Hundreds of people have rallied behind the family of Erik Berg, who died after being hit by a car on Pacific Coast Highway on Sept. 17. Berg, 39, of Thousand Oaks was hit by a car while crossing PCH, the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station said. The car had been speeding and ran a red light, the sheriff's department said. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner made the identification Saturday. Berg's co-workers at Millworks by Design, a Simi Valley-based specialty contractor, made a GoFundMe campaign to support Berg's wife and two sons. In just three days, the campaign has raised over $168,000 for Berg's family from more than 300 donors. "Erik was a keen observer of life and of people. He had a generous heart, a profound sense of justice, and a deep capacity for tough love," the company said on the GoFundMe page. Berg's co-workers celebrated his craftsmanship and ability to prioritize his family even under immense professional pressure. "Erik, thank you. Nothing is the same now. The world is immeasurably better because you were in it," the company said on the GoFundMe.
