Brush Fire Scorches 52 Acres Near Whittier Narrows

WHITTIER, CA — A brush fire broke out in Whittier Friday afternoon, quickly scorching 52 acres of brush in a wash in the Whittier Narrows area. The fire was reported about 1:10 p.m. near Rosemead Boulevard and Gallatin Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. . It quickly grew to five acres, then to 52 as firefighters from the Los Angeles County and Montebello fire departments were sent to the scene. Road closures were put into in effect for Rosemead Boulevard between Beverly Boulevard and Durfee Avenue, Lincoln Avenue between San Gabriel Boulevard and Avenue De La Merced, and San Gabriel Boulevard between Santa Anita Avenue and Lincoln. Forward progress of the fire was stopped at about 52 acres, the fire department announced at about 6 p.m. Fire crews were continuing with mop-up operations and were expected to remain at the scene overnight. Firefighters from the Los Angeles County and Montebello fire departments were sent to the scene. There were no structures threatened and no immediate reports of injuries.
