JOLIET, IL — Nobody was struck by the bullets that were fired around dinner time Thursday on Joliet's west side, but St. Paul the Apostle grade school on Woodlawn Avenue sustained damage. The shooting along the Woodlawn Avenue happened several hours after school was let out.
St. Paul's Principal Kelly Kramerich and Fr. Mark Cote, the pastor, emailed parents of their grade school students about Thursday's shooting that happened around 5:30 p.m.
Their email stated that "a random bullet entered a second-floor window of our school this evening. The incident occurred long after the final students in our extended daycare program had been picked up. The only person in the building was the woman charged with cleaning the school, who heard a noise outside and a subsequent noise inside the school."
According to St. Paul's pastor and principal, Joliet police were called, secured the area and found no intruders inside the Catholic grade school property.
The damaged window was expected to be replaced on Friday, according to St. Paul's.
"We are so grateful no one was hurt during this random incident, and we remain committed to providing a safe environment for our students," the school administrator wrote.
