Can anyone help me identify this insect?
I moved to Spartanburg 3 years ago from Rock Hill (85 miles away) and I am amazed at the diversity of insects here. I am at an age where I would rather "live and let live" rather than SQUASH IT!!
However, at the entrance of my porch, there are a nest of wasps(?) that have taken up residence in the roof area (so it's close to the height of my face!) as I enter and exit my home.
In 2 years, they have never stung me, but they get quite excited when I am nearby, and that area of my porch is a place I like to hang out and watch the sunset. I wouldn't say they "swarm" but they fly around excitedly whever I am near their nest (as many as a dozen at one time).
The question I have for you insect experts is, what kind of insect is this? It looks like a wasp. Can it sting? How potent is the sting? Is there a danger of being attacked by a swarm of these insects? Should I just bite the bullet and kill the nest? Removing the nest is not an option. They live in a dead space area above my porch.
Thank you for your expertise, in advance!!
