Press Release September 22, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Popular History Raconteur Richard W. Gifford, Esq. will Discuss “ Highways of Old Dartmouth” at the Russells Mills Village Schoolhouse, in Dartmouth, headquarters of the Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society as another in their Sunday afternoon lecture series. On Sunday, October 3rd at 2:30 PM at the Russells Mills School House, Richard Gifford will utilize the Old Dartmouth records book, “ Old Dartmouth Highways 1705-1786 ” a work which can be viewed on the Society website DartmouthHAS.org as a reference. Richard will explain how, why and where the roadways of Old Dartmouth were placed, the distinction between "open ways" and "driftways," and the roles played by the Dartmouth Selectmen and the Dartmouth Proprietors. He will examine some specific records of roadways in the Russell's Mills area as examples of the old practices. Mr. Gifford is well known to local historical buffs as a frequent contributor to research projects performing Old Dartmouth genealogical and historical investigations and publishing much original material to improve our understanding. Richard graduated from Brown University, Class of 1981, A.B. and University of Connecticut, Class of 1984, J.D. The lecture will be followed by a brief Question and Answer period and light refreshments will be provided. A $5.00 donation is suggested .
