TEWKSBURY, MA — A Boston developer has proposed to build a 300-unit apartment complex under Chapter 40B, Tewksbury said Wednesday. The Hanover Company has proposed to build five four-story buildings on roughly 30 acres of land at 300 Ames Pond. Four of the five buildings would have partial basements facing the pond, the town said. The company has applied to MassHousing, a quasi-public agency that finances affordable housing, for a letter determining that the project is eligible for a Chapter 40B comprehensive permit. The company would then file for a comprehensive permit. Comments from the town are due to MassHousing by Oct. 13. Comments and questions can be sent to [email protected]. Chapter 40B of state law allows developers to get comprehensive permits for projects that are at least 25 percent affordable. In municipalities where less than 10 percent of housing qualifies as affordable, local officials have very limited ability to stop 40B projects. Tewksbury is below the 10 percent threshold. The Hanover project would include 81 affordable units, the Tewksbury Town Crier reported. Christopher Huffaker can be reached at 412-265-8353 or [email protected].
