SHREWSBURY, MA — The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) scores and Shrewsbury High School students can be pleased with the results. While the COVID-19 pandemic has seemingly affected scores across the Commonwealth, this did not seem to be the case in Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury High School far exceeded results compared to the state and exceeded results as compared to Shrewsbury 2019 results in English. For Grade 10 English Language Arts, 35 percent of Shrewsbury students exceeded expectations compared to 19 percent average for the state and 48 percent of Shrewsbury students met expectations compared to 45 percent for state. Thus, Shrewsbury High School students had 84 percent (rounded figure) meeting or exceeding expectations as compared to 64 percent meeting or exceeding for the state in English Language Arts. This is compared to 2019 when 79 percent of Shrewsbury High School students met or exceeded expectations in English. In math, 77 percent of Shrewsbury High School students met or exceeded expectations in 2021 compared to 52 percent for the state. In 2019, 80 percent of Shrewsbury High School students met or exceeded expectations in math so 2021 scores show a slight decline.
