NEW YORK CITY — A $191 million investment will help New York City foster the offshore wind industry over 15 years, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The commitment is expected to bring 13,000 or more jobs to the city, de Blasio said Thursday. He said doubling down on wind power to help it become a center of the new industry. "This is not just a today plan — this is a long-term plan to build up our capacity," he said. And de Blasio received a commitment from his favored successor. Democratic mayoral nominee Eric Adams promised during the briefing — one of his first public appearances with de Blasio since clinching the nomination — that he'd continue the plan dubbed Offshore Wind NYC. "I'm really happy to join this announcement," Adams said. "Now is the time to grow this industry and make our city a national leader in wind power." The plan is developed between city officials and their counterparts at the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Rachel Loeb, the corporation's president, said the plan will help reduce 34 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. She said it will help New York City develop new technologies to export to the world. "And we're going to do all this while directing at least 40 percent of the jobs and investments towards women, minorities, and environmental justice communities," she said. Patch writer Anna Quinn contributed to this report.
