Here are the top stories today in Roanoke: Roanoke County officials said they have almost a$14 million budget surplus, in addition to millions in federal coronavirus relief money, will help fill some of those gaps. When the coronavirus outbreak began nationwide in early 2020, the county planned for the worst of economic impacts. Officials slashed the county's operating budget, laid off part-time employees and deferred many planned projects, anticipating a severe financial downturn. But the county wound up collecting about $11.5 million more tax money than planned, documents show. (Roanoke Times)The city of Roanoke received $64.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. After many meetings, the Star City Recovery and Resiliency plans were presented to the city council Monday night. It's a process that's taken months, with input from the public and the 30-some members on the panel narrowing more than 100 ideas to nine major projects. The city will be looking to build a community hub in the Northwest area, as well as more affordable housing.(WDBJ7)More than $9 million in federal funding is headed to two Virginia airports. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced the money from the Department of Transportation will help fund different projects. The Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport will receive $5.6 million to extend its runway.
