Here are the top stories in Burlington today: A Vermont man, Cody Ahonen, has been arrested and charged with a firearm offense after the death of his girlfriend. The suspect, 28, was arrested by agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives on Sept. 20 after his girlfriend, Brittany Bouthiette, reportedly shot herself on Sept. 15 while in a vehicle with him. Ahonen made his initial appearance today in Burlington and was ordered detained pending trial. (NEWS10 ABC)Vermont officials are defending their disbursement of pandemic relief funding following a state auditor's report found there wasn't enough oversight of the program. Amidst the coronavirus lockdowns, Burlington's Church Street essentially became a ghost town. Using a flood of federal cash, the state set up several grant programs to help businesses weather the storm, in which over 2,200 businesses received $117 million, with some getting up to $300,000. (WCAX) Research funding at University of Vermont reaches $227 million, which is an all-time high. (Vermont Biz) The Vermont Department of Health reported an increase in COVID-19 cases today, stating there have been more than double the cases from yesterday with 268 new cases.
