Point Beach Council Discusses Next Steps Regarding Intersection

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ – During its meeting on Tuesday night, the Point Pleasant Beach borough council discussed the intersection of Arnold Avenue and Route 35. This discussion was added by Mayor Paul Kantira after an incident where a driver struck a 16-year-old girl at the intersection on Sunday afternoon. Read More: Teen Girl Hit By Car While Riding Bike In Point Pleasant Beach The night of the incident, Kanitra spoke on his Facebook page about making cyclist and pedestrian safety at that intersection a priority for the borough, saying that he wanted to add this discussion to the agenda. "When we came into office, this administration obviously made vehicle, pedestrian, and bicyclist safety a priority," Kanitra said at the meeting, mention the addition of signage and painting of lanes. "We've had some success, and there have been other areas that have been a little more difficult." Kanitra said that he has already emailed both state and county officials since Arnold Avenue is a county road and Route 35 is a state road, as well as email conversations with members of the council, but he wanted to have a discussion on the record. Distracted driving and bike riding was discussed, along with the fact there are a lot of people who visit Point Pleasant Beach that isn't aware of the local roads that aren't paying as much attention, and since Route 35 is a one-way, aren't paying as much attention as they should. Kanitra then asked the council would back a resolution asking the state and Ocean County to present the council with potential solutions, which was unanimously passed.
