The event introduced seniors, including those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and their caretakers, with this groundbreaking concept in which seniors can feel safe and comfortable while revisiting the past by participating in specially targeted activities and making new friends. The day included a live broadcast with radio station WJRZ and special appearance by morning show host TJ Bryan. Town Square is a one-of-a-kind, forward-thinking, 1950s-themed, fully functioning town designed to provide seniors with activities that promote social interaction and reminiscing about the good old days, greatly improving their quality of lives. Town Square at the Jersey Shore includes 13 activity spaces in a 12,000 square-foot facility centered on Glenner Park, the focal point of Town Square Jersey Shore. Kevin Herman, Owner of Town Square at the Jersey Shore explains, “Town Square is changing the model of adult day services in a revolutionary way, with spaces and activities for both seniors that are highly independent as well as those experiencing the normal effects of aging,” said Herman. “We also cater to those living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. “Senior Community Day is a great way to get to see how our fantastic facility operates up close and learn about how Town Square engages seniors in a friendly and supportive environment. We offer programming with a wide variety of personalized activities that engenders fond memories and a sense of belonging. It is heartwarming to watch our members accept and support one another as they enjoy a thoroughly active and fun-filled day. said Linda Panarella, who collaborated with the Brick location owner since this center envisioned. Throughout the day, members engage in a wide range of exciting and thought-provoking activities focused on enjoying favorite pastimes. They include playing billiards with friends in the Game Room, learning and expressing artistic and craft abilities in the Craft Corner, gathering for book club in the Learning Center, watching favorite movies in the Starlite Theater, and playing = lawn games in Glenner Park, or having a game of Bocce on an indoor court. They can also enjoy a meal at Rosie’s Diner and spark discussions about automobiles at a service station featuring a classic Oldsmobile. Seniors are encouraged to contribute ideas and their skills and experience to activities. For instance, members may be asked to talk about their favorite old = hobbies and pastimes or their careers and community contributions sparking discussion with others. Activities evoke a time when members were young adults and experienced milestone happy memories such as graduating high school or college and getting married. For those living with dementia and Alzheimer's, Town Square can be especially beneficial. Professionals use a behavioral approach known as reminiscence therapy that uses prompts such as movies, music, photographs, games and other vintage props to stimulate long-term memories. Reminiscence therapy has been shown to reduce anxiety and lessen symptoms and side-effects of the disease by helping seniors recall older memories and to feel valued, contented and peaceful. Town Square programming is directed by experienced professionals and delivered by highly trained Program Assistants who have keen insight into dementia care, where it is needed. Not able to make Senior Community Day? Not to worry.
