MAHWAH, NJ — The ribbon has been cut outside the Peter P. Mercer Learning Commons, and Ramapo College welcomed Gov. Phil Murphy to join the day. Construction started in 2019 on the building, which the college said "offers an array of resources that go beyond those of a traditional campus library." New construction added approximately 20,000 square feet to the College's existing George T. Potter Library, making the Learning Commons approximately 80,000 square feet in size. The building will host Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, as well as other classrooms, study and media rooms, and even an on-site cafe. "The Peter P. Mercer Learning Commons is the result of a bold idea, the kind and thoughtful nourishment of that idea by its namesake, and a comprehensive team effort that we so deservedly recognize today," said Ramapo President Cindy Jebb. "While my time at Ramapo is only nearing three months, I have already been impressed by the vibrant generation of ideas and our community's shared pursuit of achievement." Murphy also spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony, noting that projects like this will help the state keep students locally, rather than having young New Jersey residents serve as "New Jersey's greatest export." "The Peter P. Mercer Learning Commons will be a meaningful and lasting addition to the Ramapo College landscape. It will be another reason for students to look within our own state for their higher education future. This is a game-changer for Ramapo and a game-changer for New Jersey." Proud to join @RamapoCollegeNJ this morning as they opened the doors to the Peter P. Mercer Learning Commons. As the new home of the Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, this building will be a meaningful and lasting addition to the campus' landscape. pic.twitter.com/f2SEfexD84— Governor Phil Murphy (@GovMurphy) September 22, 2021
