MILLBRAE, CA — A Millbrae Safeway employee charged with attempted murder Monday on suspicion of running over a woman in the store parking lot was angry at the victim because she was "mean" to him at work, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.
Garrett Young, 23, drove a gray BMW SUV into the victim, identified as 53-year-old Gryselda Joseph, at a "high rate of speed" and then ran her over "several more times," according to the sheriff's department. Deputies later found the vehicle and Young parked in front of a residence on Henry Place, and they determined that he was the suspect, according to the sheriff's department.
Joseph frequented the Safeway and Young was upset that she was yelling at him about the women's bathroom and other areas of his responsibility over recent months, according to prosecutors.
Around midnight on Monday, Young saw Joseph walking on the sidewalk after work and accelerated towards her in his car before striking her, prosecutors claimed.
Joseph was rushed to the hospital and is on life support, prosecutors said Thursday.
