Freehold Regional Shows Where Referendum Money Will Be Spent

FREEHOLD, NJ — The Freehold Regional District launched a website and social media accounts this week dedicated to the upcoming $14.46 million referendum for school roofing and pavement improvements. The proposal will be on the Nov. 2 general election ballot of the district's eight municipalities. Through a series of short videos presented by technical experts, voters can also get a better understanding of current conditions and how they will be improved. "There are no extravagant projects included in this proposal. We are focusing solely on necessary roofing and paving work in all six high schools," Superintendent of the Freehold Regional High Schol District Charles Sampson said in a video presentation. According to the official, if the referendum passes the state of New Jersey will pick up 40 percent of the cost, bringing it down to $8.68 million. If, however, the majority of voters say "no" then the money to complete the work will come from the district's annual operating budget, which will "significantly impact district programs/ services," according to the website. "The Freehold Regional High School District is in an incredibly difficult position due to the loss of $30 million in state aid as a result of Senate Bill 2," said Sampson. "[It is] simply impossible to maintain the level of service that you've come to understand and expect from the Freehold Regional High School District."
