Another COVID-19 Hospitalization Spike In RI, Cases Creep Up

PROVIDENCE, RI — The latest weekly numbers from the Rhode Island Department of Health show a mixed bag when it comes to the state's coronavirus pandemic numbers. While the percent positivity rate fell, hospitalizations saw another spike over the past week. Since last week, coronavirus-related hospitalizations rose by more than 30 new admissions. For the week of Sept. 11, there were 97 new hospital admissions, which rose to 128 this week. (Rhode Island Department of Health)Case numbers continued their slow climb, a trend that's been happening for more than a month. In the past week, there were 229 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Rhode Island, up from 214 the week before. One of the main indicators did see some improvement in the past week: the percent positivity rate. Continuing a more than monthlong trend, the rate fell slightly from 2.5 percent to 2.2 percent. That's well below 5 percent, the previous threshold of concern.
