ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst police are apparently questioning a man's report that someone attacked him with a box cutter early Tuesday morning on the Illinois Prairie Path.
According to a police report, the man told officers that he was locked out of his girlfriend's house in the rain about 3:30 a.m. So he said he went walking on the Prairie Path near Mitchell Avenue when another man demanded his phone and cut him in the chest and wrist with a box cutter, police said.
The man told police that the other man then walked away without taking the phone. Officers saw superficial cuts on the man, but he was not bleeding, police said.
Police said they asked the man whether he had any weapons on him, to which he responded that he may have had scissors in his pocket earlier.
The man then refused to be interviewed by police, the report said. His girlfriend also declined to provide her name or speak with officers, police said.
The man originally described the attacker as either white or Hispanic, in his late 20s, 6 feet, 200 pounds, and wearing a blue Nike hoodie with the hood up, gray running shorts, white socks and a light blue surgical face mask.
Police said the incident remains under investigation. Police are labeling it "suspicious circumstances."
