Description

The Eighty First Medallion Dinner of the Virginians of Maryland Fellow Virginians of Maryland members, This year we are honoring one of the greatest lacrosse coaches of all time – Dom Starsia. We would hope we get a terrific turnout, and also encourage you to bring both your spouses as well as prospective members. This should be a great recruiting tool for us. I ask you to sign up early and ask interested friends who would like to hear Coach Starsia. It should be quite a night! It’s been a strange year for all of us. Given the continued concern over COVID, we will again not be able to have our spring cocktail party but will resume all “normal” activities again this fall. We have confirmed with former UVA lacrosse coach Dom Starsia that he can come to the Maryland Club on Thursday, October 28 to accept his Medallion Award, so please mark this date on your calendars. His biography is below as a reminder. Coach Starsia has given back to the sport of lacrosse and our youth perhaps more than perhaps any coach in history. He is honored by being our Medallion Award recipient, and very much looks forward to our event. I trust each of you will mark this event on your calendars and will bring wives and prospective members as your guests. This should be a terrific event for all. We are also attaching our annual dues and scholarship donation request. Please renew your membership and donate some extra money for our annual scholarship. We will be contacting colleges shortly to award our scholarship to a worthy Maryland senior attending one of our Virginia alma maters. More on that shortly from Tuley Wright who runs our Scholarship program. Thank you for your continued membership, and I very much look forward to seeing you all again this fall. Warm regards, Tom Neale President Virginians of Maryland UVA BA ’74; William and Mary MBA ‘78 DOM STARSIA BIOGRAPHY: Widely regarded as one of the best teachers, motivators and tacticians in the game, Dom Starsia finished his 24th season at the helm of the Virginia men's lacrosse program in 2016. Under Starsia's guidance, his Cavalier squads won four NCAA titles, reached the final four 13 times, and led the Cavaliers to the NCAA Tournament 21 times. He won more games than any coach in Atlantic Coast Conference and Virginia history, sporting a 274-103 (.727) record since coming to Charlottesville in 1993. Starsia's overall record, including 10 seasons at Brown, is 375-149 (.716) in 34 years. His 375 wins are the most all-time by a coach at a Division I school, passing legendary coach Jack Emmer (326). The USILA named Starsia the 2011 F. Morris Touchstone Division I Head Coach of the Year, his third career F. Morris Touchstone Award, previously winning at Brown in 1985 and 1991. Starsia shares the lead as a three-time winner with legendary coaches Richard M. Moran (Cornell), Robert Scott (Johns Hopkins) and Tony Seaman (Pennsylvania/Towson). In fitting recognition of his coaching success, Starsia was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in November 2008, one of only four active Division I coaches so honored. During his coaching tenure, Virginia has featured 125 All-Americans (30 first-team, 31 second-team, 25 third team and 39 honorable mention choices), 71 All-ACC selections, eight ACC Rookies of the Year and seven ACC Players of the Year. In addition, UVA has produced five NCAA Championship MVPs and 37 All-NCAA Tournament selections. Excellence in Starsia's program isn't only defined by what happens on the field. Fifteen Cavaliers have been named Scholar All-Americans under his tutelage, including at least one in five of the last six seasons. Steele Stanwick (2011), Matt Ward (2006) and Chris Rotelli (2003) capped their national championship seasons by winning the Tewaaraton Trophy as the top player in the nation, giving UVA the most first-time winners of the award. A native of Valley Stream, N.Y., Starsia came to UVA from his alma mater, Brown University, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding coach and athlete. He currently serves on the NCAA Championship advisory committee, the USILA All-American selection committee, the Tewaaraton Trophy selection committee, as well as the ACC Sportsmanship Committee. Starsia was inducted into the Central Virginia chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2003 and is a charter member of Brown University's Advisory Council on Athletics. Events presented by the Virginains of Maryland ("VOM") are for the purpose to preserve and fasten interest and pride in Virginia history and traditions, to celebrate the anniversaries of great events in her annals, and to cultivate social and friendly relations among members.
