Description

Mark your calendars for a free public stargazing event with Marin Stargazers on Sunday October 10 from 7-9 pm at McInnis County Park in San Rafael! Volunteers with telescopes will be on hand to share views of the mountains and craters of the Moon, the beautiful rings of Saturn and the mighty planet Jupiter with its cloud belts and four bright moons, along with colorful double stars and selected objects from far beyond our Solar System. A great event for families or anyone with a little curiosity! You’ll get a “sky tour” and learn about the bright stars and constellations of the fall sky, such as Cygnus the Swan, Cassiopeia and Andromeda. In addition to an array of telescopes, binoculars are provided for the evening with a short demonstration of how to use them for astronomy. Marin Stargazers is an all-volunteer group of experienced amateur astronomers, college instructors and professional scientists. We have been presenting these popular events as part of our mission to “share the wonders of the universe”. We are excited to host our first event at McInnis Park with the help of our friends at Marin County Parks! Directions: From 101, take exit 456 to Smith Ranch Road and head east about 0.7 miles. Cross the railroad tracks, then take the second right to Mt. Tam field. Please arrive by 7 pm as we start observing the waxing crescent Moon, with brilliant Venus nearby. As dusk falls, the amazing gas giant planets Saturn and Jupiter will take center stage. Bonus: on October 10, Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a gigantic, centuries old storm, is predicted to be visible during our session!
