RESTON, VA — Former Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins will be honored at an Oct. 16 ceremony as part of Community Day celebration at the Southgate Community Center in Reston. Hudgins' successor on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Walter Alcorn, along with his fellow supervisors and representatives from the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, will convene to officially rename the Southgate Community Center in Hudgins' honor. Alcorn introduced a board measure in May, recognizing his predecessor's 19-year tenure on the board representing the Hunter Mill District. "She was a community builder with a passion for improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods that are often overlooked," Alcorn said, in the board matter. "One of Supervisor Hudgins' biggest accomplishments and one that is a lasting legacy is the re-creation of the Southgate Community Center as a County-owned facility in Reston in 2006." For Hudgins' tireless efforts in negotiating a lease with the Reston Association and shepherding the project through the county's development process, Alcorn moved that the center, which is located at 12125 Pinecrest Road in Reston, bear her name. The board unanimously agreed. Although the renaming ceremony will take place at 2 p.m., the center will be open from 1-5 p.m., as part of the Southgate Community Day celebration. Visitors will be able to listen to music, play games, purchase items from food vendors, and find out more about county resources. All activities are free.
