Oxford Police Find 13 Percent Ignore School Zone Speed Limit

OXFORD BOROUGH, PA — Ever see someone speeding through a school zone and wondered how many are disregarding the posted limit? Oxford Borough Police Department determined more than 13 percent of drivers disregarded a flashing school zone speed alert. On Sept. 20 between 2:20 and 3:56 p.m., the Oxford Borough Police Department conducted a traffic detail along the 400 block S. 5th Street, at the intersection of S. 5th and Garfield streets. Four officers used a speed-timing device to enforce the 15-mile per hour limit in a designated school zone with flashing yellow lights activated between 2:15 and 4 p.m. During the detail, 267 vehicles were clocked in the northbound direction only, the Department reported. Out of the 267 vehicles, 36 vehicles were speeding, in violation of PA's school zone speed code, which carries maximum fines of $500 and three points on a driver's license record for violations. The 36 speeding vehicles represent 13.48 percent of the total vehicles that passed through the zone northbound. Of the 36, the average speeder was traveling 26.7 miles per hour, Police reported. Oxford Police said the highest speed recorded was 40 miles per house in the 15-zone. Oxford Borough Police said there will be more traffic details scheduled this year.
