Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Paige Austin, your host of the Los Angeles Daily. Fall is here! Wednesday marks the first day of fall, but in Los Angeles it will feel more like the dog days of summer with a high of 107 degrees in parts of the valley. Officials are warning residents to stay hydrated and out of the afternoon sun. A cool down is expected on Thursday. But the LA mayor's race is just starting to heat up. Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de Leon announced his intention to run for mayor in 2022 Tuesday, making him the most prominent candidate among the already crowded field of contenders. Congresswoman Karen Bass will reportedly reach a decision this week about whether she will run. If she does run, she and de Leon — two progressives with deep roots and long political histories in the community — would square off as early frontrunners, according to at least one straw poll.
