DETROIT — Republican candidate for governor James Craig said he supports Michigan's law banning abortions and would stop Democrats from trying to repel it if elected, according to an American Bridge 21st Century recording. When a man asked Craig if he would stop Democrats from passing legislation that makes abortion illegal in Michigan at a campaign event in Marquette on Thursday, Craig said "I will do whatever I can — I'm pro-life." When asked again more specifically if he would stop Democrats from repealing Michigan's law, Craig said "yes." Michigan's 90-year-old abortion ban was nullified in 1973 by the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which ruled that women have a constitutional right to terminate their pregnancies. Live in Detroit? However, many fear the conservative majority on the Supreme Court will overturn the case, which would then allow states to enact their own laws regarding abortion. The U.S. Supreme Court will start hearing the Mississippi case that could threaten Roe v. Wade next summer. So Democrats, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have called on legislators to repeal Michigan's ban on abortion in case Roe v. Wade is overturned. If overturned, Michigan's law on abortion will go back into effect.
