Saving to pay for college? Always best to plan early. College bound next year? FAFSA opens Oct 1. The sooner you apply, the better. There's a Big Mandatory college expense you probably didn't know about that you can apply for a waiver. For this school year, U of Illinois $1,428, U of Minnesota $2,796, Northwestern $4,386, University of Chicago $4,566. Some may have a few days left to apply for this current semester's waiver.
