Description
I have a unique project that I need help with. I'm about to begin a reno in a Fairfax district salon that will include new floor tile on a section of the existing concrete floor. The client doesn't want there to be a transition to the tile at all. He wants the new tile to be on the same plane as the concrete floor. Scoring and removing 5/8 to 3/4 of concrete where the tile will go is possible, but not ideal.
Instead, I'd like to do a polished concrete overlay that gently rises to the new tile edge and feathers into the existing concrete floor several feet away creating basically an imperceptible rise that eliminates any sharp transition. The current floor is pretty rustic, so if it's a visible line (but not an edge) at the point where the overlay feathers, that is just fine.
In the pictures you can see the state of the floor. We'll be tiling the whole middle section where that sink is, so the overlay would be against the tile edge in the foreground and in the background.
Another idea is if we could do the same concept with epoxy and match the color of the polished concrete as closely as possible. This is not my area, so I'm not sure about either plan. Please reply via the email exchange with your ideas, expertise/experience and availability for a meet at the salon to scope the project.
