EDUCATE medical, hospice, and funeral professionals about CJD and the care of CJD patients 3. RAISE AWARENESS of CJD 4. SUPPORT RESEARCH aimed at finding a treatment and a cure WHAT IS CJD.... CJD is a degenerative brain disorder caused by misfolded prion proteins, which destroy brain cells. The incidence of CJD cases worldwide is one to two cases, per million individuals, per year. In the United States this statistic translates to nearly 200-350 new cases per year. Eighty-five percent of CJD cases are sporadic, meaning there is no known cause at present.
