AUBURN PUBLIC CEMETERY DISTRICT - www.auburncemetery.com CEMETERY MAINTENANCE PERSON I DEFINITION Under general supervision of the Lead Maintenance Person, to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction, and beautification of cemetery grounds, buildings, and other facilities and equipment; open and close graves; and to do related work as required. Flexibly staffed with Maintenance Person II. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Mows, waters, and trims lawns, shrubs, trees, and other cemetery grounds. 2. Operate, service, and maintain all types of mowers, turf maintenance equipment, district vehicles, and equipment. 3. Assists with open and closing of various types of graves. 4. Cleans and performs minor repairs to buildings and related facilities. 5. Keeps tools and equipment in clean and safe working condition. 6. Assists with installation and repairs of sprinkler systems. 7. Performs all types of concrete work, including setting markers. 8. Assists in carrying caskets to the grave location. 9. Sets up signs, lowering device, chairs, and tent for funeral services. 10. Assists in the location and layout of graves. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS 1. KNOWLEDGE OF: a. Construction and maintenance material, procedures, and equipment with particular reference to cemetery operations. b. Methods, tools, techniques, and supplies in gardening and cemetery maintenance work. c. Methods, tools, techniques, and supplies used in opening and closing graves. d. Safe work practices. 2. ABILITY TO: a. Perform semi-skilled or skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction, and beautification of cemetery grounds, buildings, and other facilities. b. Operate, service, and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance and construction equipment. c. Perform heavy manual labor. d. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. e. Works cooperatively with others. REQUIREMENTS 1. Must possess a valid California driver's license and pass background and drug screening. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to: 1. Frequently use hands and fine motor skills to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms; 2. Frequently stand, sit, walk, and talk or hear; 3. Occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; 4. Frequently sit/drive and operate plant equipment for extended periods; 5. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds; 6. Bend the knees and step up and down from plant equipment frequently; 7. Frequently walk/negotiate uneven, sloping, and slippery ground; 8. Occasionally travel to other locations using District vehicles; 9. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
