Learn the art of using plants, flowers and leaves to create unexpected color on textiles. A Rainbow from the Dye GardenSaturday October 10, 10 am - 1 pm at Alemany Farm Instructor: LisaRuth Elliott Masks required Learn how to get started dyeing various fibers using plants with this introductory workshop. We will cover dyes made from traditional dye plants grown in the Alemany Farm dye garden, from foraged leaves and flowers and bark, and from everyday food waste in your kitchen. We will tour the Alemany Farm dye garden and explore the early fall farmscape as a color palette. We will then make pots of fresh dye using traditional dye plants harvested from the Alemany Farm dye garden. You will take home a jar of dyestuff with a length of dyed silk, and receive basic instructions and a bibliography for handy at-home reference. Please note: This is a basic workshop. If you have some experience with plant dyeing and are looking for more advanced techniques of dyeing, this workshop may not be for you. LisaRuth Elliott, a Friends of Alemany Farm Auxiliary member and farm volunteer since 2010, has been experimenting with foraged and traditional plant dyes since 2017. She is a paper and fiber artist, weaver and creator of textiles, and worked as a public muralist. She is grateful to help steward Ramaytush Ohlone land as a guest here. Yes there is limited parking on the farm (on the gravel drive inside the fence). There is also street parking on Alemany Blvd and Ellsworth streets and in the surrounding neighborhood by St Mary Rec Center. Friends of Alemany Farm is a volunteer group that manages the horticulture, volunteer, and educational programs at Alemany Farm, a 3.5 acre organic farm ecosystem in southeast San Francisco.
