Pylon Reenactment Society & Elf Power special Double Bill! Presented by Aubrey Entertainment ALL AGES Pylon Reenactment Society, Elf Power Join us for an amazing fall co-bill with Pylon Reenactment Society and Elf Power on the outdoor mainstage at Southern Brewing Company! When people talk about the beginnings of the music scene in Athens, GA the discussion usually begins “The B-52’s, R.E.M...” Those who know will continue the list, PYLON. They were every Athens, GA band’s favorite Athens band. Their musical naïveté, southern upbringing, art school smarts, and house-party roots exploded together to create something quite improbably amazing, hitting the listener on mental, physical, and spiritual levels simultaneously. On the surface, their angular guitar parts and dynamic rhythm section had something in common with UK post-punk bands like Gang of Four and PIL, but PYLON was more fun and less studied — and they had a secret weapon in Vanessa Briscoe Hay, whose inimitable vocal textures and phrasing defined the band’s sound for most listeners. Pylon Reenactment Society (PRS) began in 2014 by performing at what was to be a one-off show for Art Rocks Athens. Casper & the Cookies provided Vanessa with a backing band which included guitar wizard Jason NeSmith, powerhouse bassist Kay Stanton and hard-hitting drummer Gregory Sanders. Invited back to open for Fred Schneider by Art Rocks Athens in 2015, PRS added drummer Joe Rowe after Gregory Sanders bowed out to have shoulder surgery. Damon Denton was also added on keyboards. Positive feedback plus an invitation from Dressy Bessy to open some shows for them led to more opportunities to perform. What had started as a one-off project, wowed both long-time fans who thought they would never see Pylon’s music performed live again and younger fans who had just discovered it. Besides Art Rocks Athens, PRS has performed for festivals and events like Part Time Punks in LA, Savannah Stopover, Sarasota Film Fest, U+N Fest in Philadelphia, Barely Human Fest in Detroit, Irrelevant Festival in Atlanta, Athens Popfest, Westobou in Augusta and at Primavera Sound 19 in Barcelona. PRS have toured the Northwest, West, Northeast and Southern United States. They released an EP of Pylon covers recorded for Part Time Punks in LA and a well received single of original material on Chunklet Industries. In 2019 PRS were filmed at Southern Brewing Company in Athens for a documentary called Athens GA Inside Out 2: Red Turns Into Blue scheduled for release in November 2021. The enthusiasm of audiences at their live shows provided impetus to keep moving forward and to keep writing fresh material in the spirit of Pylon. Since the “great pause,” PRS have returned to their original 4 piece line-up. For upcoming shows, plans are in place to perform Pylon’s album ‘Gyrate’ in its entirety along with other favorites and originals. Pylon Reenactment Society aren’t Pylon, but are maybe the next best thing. Elf Power formed in 1994 and over the last 23 years have released thirteen albums, two eps, and a handful of singles, while touring North America, Europe, and Japan many times. Albums such as 1998's Dave Fridmann-produced "A Dream In Sound" and 2008's collaboration with the late Vic Chesnutt, "Dark Developments" have cemented the bands' reputation as the finest purveyors of modern melodic psychedelic folk rock around. Their tour in support of their last album , 2013's "Sunlight on the Moon", took them on an extensive tour in support of Neutral Milk Hotel's much acclaimed reunion tour, as well as dates with Broken Bells and headlining dates. 2017’s “Twitching in Time” took them on two American tours and two European tours, including festivals in Norway and the Czech Republic. Elf Power also runs their own record label/land conservation group called Orange Twin (see www.orangetwin.com). The label releases records by Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel and many others, proceeds from sales of which go towards supporting the land conservation group, which involves 150 acres of land on the outskirts of Athens, formerly an old girl scout camp, currently being turned into a self sustainable, low impact village and nature preserve.
