American Legion Post 275 Announces New 2nd Vice Commander

DUNEDIN, FL — During American Legion Post 275's general meeting last month Jeff Blocker was sworn in as 2nd vice commander after the executive committee unanimously approved Post Commander Sid Damsgard's recommendation for his appointment. According to Damsgard, Blocker's primary duties are chairmanship of the committee on post improvements and the physical needs of the post and assume the duties of the commander in the absence of the commander and 1st vice commander, or at any time the commander calls upon the 2nd vice commander to do so. "Jeff's maintenance background is very helpful when it comes to maintaining the post," said Damsgard. "He's a team player, always willing and able to assist wherever he is needed. If he sees something that needs to be done, he takes the initiative to do it without having to be asked." Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Blocker served in the Navy from 1972–1975, and left the sea-going service as a machinery repairman 3rd Class petty officer. Blocker said he had some choice duty assignments - Holy Loch, Scotland, San Diego. He wrapped up his active duty time in his hometown of Charleston, and thinks of the post as family. "I've lived in Dunedin eight years, and been a member of Post 275 for five. My wife and I kept passing by on the Pinellas Trail, so one day we stopped in to check it out. We liked what we saw, and so I joined the legion and she joined the auxiliary," he said. Prior to being appointed 2nd vice, Blocker stood out among the many volunteers for Monday and Thursday morning post cleanups, Sunday breakfasts, Pinellas Trail cleanups, maintenance, assisting in making parade floats and participating in parades. According to Blocker, he's always been handy, but his time in service helped him hone his skills. "I have general knowledge of building maintenance, and I hope to keep up with the required maintenance on the building and grounds," he said.
