BRADENTON, FL — A U.S. postal worker was killed Monday after an SUV's driver ran a stop sign and crashed into a mail truck, Bradenton police said.
Around 12:15 p.m., Phillip B. Simpson of Bradenton drove his Mercedes SUV through the stop sign in the 3300 block of 7th Avenue West, police said. The 79-year-old driver's SUV collided with the U.S. postal service truck, causing it to turn on its side.
The mail carrier, Michael Silvestri, 41, of Bradenton died at the scene.
Toxicology tests are pending, though investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, police said.
Pending the results of the toxicology test, Simpson will be issued a citation for failing to stop for a stop sign and will be given a mandatory court appearance, police said.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Officer Jacob Bjurholm at 941-932-9300 or email [email protected].
