BOSTON — A large water main break flooded parts of Beacon Hill while leaving a sinkhole in one street early Tuesday morning.
A contractor working for Boston Water and Sewer Commission struck a 30-inch water main, causing water to rush down Hancock Street, into homes and businesses, says Boston Fire Department.
The water was eventually shut off, but the extensive amount of water left behind a sinkhole along Hancock and Cambridge Streets.
Boston Deputy Fire Chief James Greene believes the road could be repaved by Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency crews went door to door to homes in the area making sure everyone was okay while Eversource and National Grid checked for electrical issues.
"There is water in some of these units, not as much as you'd think based on the amount of water that was coming down the road, but still enough to cause problems," Greene said.
According to Boston Fire Department, no injuries were reported.
