$193M Capital Budget Proposal Includes Expansion At Crofton MS

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent George Arlotto presented a $193 million fiscal year 2023 capital budget recommendation to the board of education that contains construction funding for six major school projects and design funding for a seventh. Arlotto's recommendation, which was delivered to the board at its Sept. 1 meeting, contains $128.2 million for major capital projects that include construction at the following schools, in priority order: Quarterfield Elementary School, $5 millionHillsmere Elementary School, $5.7 millionRippling Woods Elementary School, $6 millionOld Mill West High School, $44 millionWest County Elementary School, $21.6 millionOld Mill Middle School South, $40.6 million Arlotto's recommendation also contains $5.3 million for design of a new Center of Applied Technology – North, which is scheduled to be constructed on the current Old Mill High campus.Also included in Arlotto's recommendation is $30 million for building systems renovations, $10 million for classroom additions at Southgate Elementary School and Crofton Middle School, and $3.5 million for athletic stadium improvements. Arlotto also has provided the board with a recommended six-year capital improvement plan, which allocates requested funding for projects through fiscal year 2028. Testimony will be taken at a public hearing scheduled to be held before the board takes up initial adoption at its next regularly scheduled public meeting Thursday. The workshop is open to the public but will not be televised or streamed on AACPS' YouTube channel. After approval by the board, the plan will be submitted to the State of Maryland for funding consideration. The plan will also be part of the school system's overall fiscal year 2023 budget request, to be forwarded to the County Executive in February 2022 after the board holds additional public hearings. The County Council will review that plan and adopt a final capital budget for the school system by June 2022.
