UNION CITY, CA — City leaders report that in 2021 they received reports of 169 cases of illegal fireworks use, 10 total fires including 2 structures and 5 vegetation fires, and a medical call attributed to fireworks. These reports tied-up Union City's police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other city staff who had to respond to the calls. City Manager Joan Malloy sent a letter to the community asking if it's time for Union City to modify its policies and penalties for illegal fireworks use. Most Bay Area communities long ago banned the sale and use of fireworks. A webinar will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, "Fireworks Safety in Union City: A Discussion of Potential Policies."
