Description

Press release from the West Chester Borough: September 21, 2021 Borough residents may already know, we have been experiencing issues with the street lighting at various locations throughout the borough. The issues include lights not turning on/off, flickering, brightness of lights, lights turning on at irregular hours, etc. The initial response was to turn these non-working lights to manual function, but this process was found to be too expensive to sustain. Borough Council has been made aware of the issues and the Public Works Department has been working diligently to find a resolution to these issues. Bulbs are not burning out, but rather there is a malfunction with the control system on the individual light poles. Unfortunately, neither the public works department nor our electrical contractor can take immediate corrective measures, as the system requires a new software platform, therefore there is no quick fix. The Public Works Department has identified a company that offers a product that is expected to resolve the issues. Having over 1,000 lights in the Borough makes the cost of implementing the corrective measure a very costly endeavor. Approximately a dozen nodes have been received, which will be installed to conduct a test of the products reliability. If successful, the Public Works Department intends to include the cost of the product, along with the installation costs, in the budget for the next calendar year.  So, a solution to this problem could take us into the spring of next year.
