PETALUMA, CA — Evacuation orders were lifted around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in a structure fire just outside Petaluma city limits that spread to vegetation, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said.
The house fire broke out around 1 p.m. in the 400 block of Ormsby Lane in unincorporated Petaluma and flames spread west, according to the sheriff's office.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued at 2 p.m. for Zone 5K1 - Penngrove, which encompasses an area north of Corona Road, south of Old Redwood Highway, east of Petaluma city limits and west of Adobe Road.
"If you are in this area, calmly and quickly evacuate now," the sheriff's office said at the time. "Check with your neighbors to ensure they know about this order if you have time."
First responders went door to door to help evacuees.
Petaluma police advised the public to avoid Ely Road North and Corona Road to reduce traffic congestion and increase safety.
In a follow-up statement at 3:39 p.m. Tuesday, Petaluma police confirmed evacuation orders were lifted but first responders remained on scene in the fire-evacuation areas on Ely Road North and Corona Road in Penngrove.
"Residents returning to their homes and properties, please use caution."
