CHICAGO — A 58-year-old man has been charged in connection with the attack of a North Side alderman in the Uptown neighborhood Saturday night. EARLIER: Chicago Alderman Attacked With Table Leg On North Side: Police Tony Landers is accused of hitting Ald. James Cappleman of the 46th Ward in the head with a table leg just three blocks from the ward office, Chicago police told reporters. Cappleman was in the area of Racine and Leland avenues responding to a resident's text about a "group of intoxicated individuals." Cappleman said he knew Landers from around the neighborhood prior to approaching him. In a news conference, Cappleman said he had met with Landers several times before to discuss issues the man was having. Landers was arrested after the attack and now faces charges of misdemeanor aggravated assault on public property. He is scheduled to appear in court in October. Cappleman refused medical attention and said his injuries from the incident were minor. He listed two other times he has been attacked while in office including being charged at with a knife in 2012 and being pushed into the street while sweeping a sidewalk.
