BURR RIDGE, IL – A Burr Ridge man pleaded guilty and then was sentenced Monday to the drug-induced homicide of a Hinsdale woman in 2019, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. The woman has been identified as 23-year-old Lauren Tandy. Wasim Rashan, 30, of the 800 block of Lakeview Lane, was sentenced to a dozen years in prison, the state's attorney said. On the night of Jan. 14, 2019, Hinsdale police found the victim dead at her house, apparently because of a drug overdose, according to the state's attorney. Authorities recovered in her bedroom baggies containing a substance determined to be a heroin-fentanyl mixture. The next day, a search warrant was conducted of Rashan's home. There, officers found baggies that matched ones at the victim's home, a scale with residue on it, and the names and phone numbers, including the victim's, police said. Authorities further discovered the victim died from a drug overdose after ingesting the heroin-fentanyl mixture supplied to her by Rashan, prosecutors said. Besides drug-induced homicide, Rashan also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. In a news release, State's Attorney Robert Berlin said it was important to hold drug dealers accountable. And he said penalties for drug-induced homicide may give them pause before supplying drugs. "In 2020, DuPage County suffered 112 opioid overdose deaths, a 17 percent increase from the year before" Berlin said. "2020 also marked the first year that we grieved more than one hundred deaths due to opioid overdose. To reduce this number of senseless deaths to the only acceptable number, which is zero, we must get these drugs off the streets."
