CORNELIUS, NC —The Cornelius Town Board on Monday night unanimously approved rezoning for the Sefton Park project, a mixed-use development that would be built across from the CATS station on Sefton Park Road, just beyond Jetton Road Extension, according to Cornelius Today. According to WSOC-TV, South Carolina-based Shaw Resources, Inc. had sought the rezoning of the 10-acre parcel of land for the project, which is set to include: 344 multi-family units, a 113-room hotel, a conference center and 7,800 square feet of commercial space. Developer Michael Johnson represented Shaw Resources at Monday's meeting, and he said the development also will feature parking decks in order to maximize open space on the ground. This will help the developers achieve their concept of creating a linear park throughout the site. "When people live in this community, what they are going to see . . . this is their front yard," Johnson said. According to Cornelius Today, Shaw Resources has agreed to provide some housing units at reduced rates for town workers. The development company also will be required to make several improvements to area roads. Johnson said the development's location adjacent to public transportation will be a major selling point. "This site has a very unique proposition that no other apartment complex or community complex in Cornelius has: it has a Park and Ride, and we want to capitalize on that transit feature," Johnson said. Johnson said he is looking forward to working with Cornelius officials on the project. "It's going to be a partnership between all of us, we'll work together and we'll do our best to deliver the best product for the people of this community," Johnson said. With the approval of rezoning for the Sefton Park project, Cornelius Today said the town now has approved rezoning for 1,435 new residential units in 2021.
