SYRACUSE, N.Y. – John View, a retired veteran higher education administrator, has been named chair of the Board of Trustees of his undergraduate alma mater, Saint Leo University, in central Florida. He assumed the responsibility July 1. The duration of the term is two years. View retired in 2016 from his position as director of Financial Aid and the Equal Opportunity Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He spent 37 years at the college and continues to live in the Syracuse area with his wife, Lorraine Schunck. Earlier in his career, View held financial aid positions at SUNY Canton and Broome Community College. A graduate of Catholic Central High School in Binghamton, NY, View enrolled at Saint Leo University and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in secondary education. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with Honors in 1974 with a master's degree in educational administration and leadership, and he earned an MBA from Syracuse University in 1986. More than a decade ago, View answered the call to become involved with his undergraduate alma mater, joined the Alumni Association, and served as its president. He was invited to become a member of the Saint Leo University Board of Trustees and served a nine-year term, ending in 2013. View was welcomed back to the board in 2016 and was elected vice-chair in 2019. When View, a Syracuse native, enrolled at Saint Leo, it was a small college. Now, the Catholic Benedictine university enrolls students at its main campus north of Tampa, at education centers in Florida and in four other states, and from locations around the world through its online programs.
