Church Sexton - Custodial and Maintenance

The sexton will be responsible for cleaning, light maintenance, and minor repairs to the church buildings and grounds. Setting up and moving tables, chairs, and other furniture for events will be done frequently. Other duties may be assigned. This is an essential service to the church to provide a clean, comfortable, and safe environment. The sexton will report to and be supervised by the church rector who will provide a list of cleaning to be completed routinely. The rector will coordinate with other staff and volunteers to determine maintenance, repair, and set-up tasks as they arise, and will communicate those to the sexton. The rector and sexton will set hours of work, Monday to Friday, 25 hours per week. Occasionally, the rector and sexton may agree to adjust times and days worked for special event set-up or clean-up. The position will have an annual performance review performed by the rector. Basic Qualifications: Knowledge of and skill in cleaning procedures and processes, products and equipment. Knowledge, or the ability to acquire knowledge of basic building maintenance Ability to perform basic repairs and safely use the tools to do so. A demonstrated awareness of surroundings and the ability to translate that to carry through on what needs to be done or problems that need to be addressed as they relate to the building and property. Ability to recognize work that needs to be done, be proactive about taking care of problems, and work with moderate supervision. Able to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs, work from a tall ladder, kneel, squat, and stand to perform duties. Due to the location of the church the sexton must have access to their own transportation. Cleaning Duties: Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors; dusting and wiping down of various surfaces; cleaning windows; cleaning entrance areas, including exterior doors; collecting and taking out trash; keeping sidewalks and parking areas clear of litter; thorough cleaning of bathrooms; replenishing toilet paper and hand towels; shampooing carpets as needed; keeping storage areas clean and uncluttered. Maintenance & Other Duties: Changing light bulbs (within reach of a ladder); updating clocks and replacing batteries; changing air vent filters; minor drywall repairs; simple plumbing repairs; painting; other light repairs and improvements will be as needed and will depend on the sexton's skills. Repairs that are specialized or complex will be reported to the rector or administrator. The sexton will regularly inform the administrator of supplies that need to be purchased.
