This immersion case study will focus on how the celebrated but temperamental Pinot Noir grape expresses itself in different regions outside of Europe. The ethereal beauty of Pinot Noir is easily noticed in the Grand Crus of Burgundy, especially in great vintages, but true elegance can be found in New World interpretations as well, and frequently on a more consistent basis. Pinot Noir is also a most-versatile pairing partner, compatible with a wide spectrum of foods, and New World Pinot is very often more-approachable, and more culinarily diverse than affordable Burgundy. Premium sites, innovative new winemaking techniques, and talented young wine makers have turned New World Pinot Noir into a hotly trending global phenomenon, which we will explore in detail through a mixed-case of 12 selected premium wines. Pinot Noir from: Willamette Valley, Oregon; the Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, and Santa Barbara County in California' the North and South Islands of New Zealand; Tasmania and mainland Australia, as well as South Africa will all be explored and compared. New World Pinot is all the rage right now. Join us as we endeavor to discover which are the most-impressive, and why. This program is hosted by The Somm School in association with Michael La Vardera.
