MIAMI, FL — The passengers on board a recent American Airlines Miami-to-Houston flight already had to wait through nine hours of delays when they were met with a pair of people who refused to comply with the mask rule.
But even in the face of continued delays, some passengers on Flight 1469 were able to keep their sense of humor. A group of them chanted "Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye," toward the mask refusers, who, along with one other passenger, were booted from the flight.
"Three people kicked out of American Airlines flight in MIA that had already been delayed for 9 hours," the Only in Dade Twitter account posted, along with a video of the passengers' reaction. "Two for not following mask rules and another person for arguing with them."
American Airlines said the flight was headed to Houston but had to return to the Miami International Airport to remove the maskless passengers, according to a WKRN report.
The airline confirmed, in a statement to NBC Miami, the customers had to be deplaned due to not following federal face covering requirements, which mandate the wearing of masks while on public transportation.
"Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye" is a famous repeating line from the classic 1969 song by the band Steam, similarly titled "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye."
The song was brought to life by former Chicago White Sox baseball organist Nancy Faust during the 1977 Major League Baseball season as a way for fans of the South Side team to celebrate when the opposing team is forced to remove a pitcher from a game.
It has since been etched in sports trash-talking lore, commonly chanted by fans of a home team when their squad is soundly defeating the visitors.
