BELLMORE, NY — History was made in Bellmore, where Sofia LaSpina became the first female to score a touchdown in Long Island high school history. LaSpina, a junior at Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, caught the 4-yard touchdown pass on Saturday in a 49-21 victory over Roslyn. "When the ball was in the air, I just wanted to catch it and that was the only thing I had in my mind," LaSpina, a wide receiver, said in a statement. In the post-game huddle, head coach Anthony Cracco happily handed her the game ball. "We couldn't be prouder of Sofia," Cracco said in a statement. "She has worked exceptionally hard to achieve success on the field. At the time, none of us realized the historical achievement that we had just witnessed." LaSpina has always enjoyed football since playing in the backyard with her siblings. "I would always watch the Jets and want to play so I waited for middle school to try football out and I ended up loving it," she said. Her accomplishment caught the attention of the New York Jets, naming her Player of the Week. She'll be honored at a game this season.
